Michael J. Bergstroem - symptomatic
Onset of symptoms: age: 17
Birthdate: 2/3/61 |
|
Medications: Penicillamine |
| How My Wilson's Disease was Discovered |
| It was diagnosed at St Mary's hospital, Paddington UK about 6 months after my initial neurological symptons. Urine collections, blood tests and KF rings were sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. |
| My Symptoms Before Treatment |
| I had rapidly increasing neurological dysfunction. It started with bad handwriting, and folllowed by tremors, stiffness, drooling and speech impediment and difficulty in swallowing. By the time I was diagnosed, I could hardly write or do any fine co-ordination work.
|
| My Symptoms Now |
| Slightly unfluent handwriting. Slight slurring of speech when very tired, or after not many beers. I get tired easily. This may be due to iron defficiency caused by d-penicillamine. |
| Additional Comments |
I am an electronic engineer by trade and lead a perfectly normal life. I like to play sports and attempt to play guitar and other instruments.
For recently diagnosed patients, my advice is, be patient, treatment can be very effective for WD, especially if caught early.
